Today's hike
[begin casual-speak mode]
Went for a hike today - Troll Falls. I was joined by (or, more precisely, I joined) Alu, Amanda, Angel (Amanda's goofy dog), and The Other Dog (AKA Ahab).
From Calgary, it's a swift drive west on Hwy 1, followed by a short stint south on Hwy 40 to the Kananaskis Village turnoff. There is a parking lot in that area listed as the Stoney Trailhead, but there are a number of hiking / x-country skiing / equestarian trails that can be joined at that junction.
Anyways, it was about 45 minutes from the cars to the falls, trekking along some well-groomed snow, covering something around 2 km.
Aside from a gargantuan bear-like dog, there wasn't much traffic on the trail - rather surprising for a +9 Celcius day.
So we get to the falls, and lo! it is completely frozen over, creating a tunnel walled on one side by a thick sheet of clear ice, and on the other by the rockface. So we climb into it, all 5 of us, and catch an amazing glimpse of water still flowing inside the ice cocoon. It gave the impression of a light-blue velvet curtain being jostled lightly by a breeze. I want one in my room.
Anyways, it was so gorgeous there that we busted out the stove, made some tea, and sipped it gently while enjoying the solitude.
Booyah.
